Five Minute Crafts: Toast Painting

toast painting activity craft left brain craft brainI’ve decided that I’m all about combining crafts with everything. I joked the other day about combining crafts with eat what I made you for dinner.. Well, we’ve done it!  It’s called Toast Painting.

It’s super easy.  Mix a few drops of food coloring with milk and paint away on your bread.  Then toast and top as you wish. This is a great way to use that leftover baguette that’s really too hard to be yummy anymore.  Paint it and call it art crostini :)  Wheat bread works too, but you might want to make the colors a little more concentrated.  Also, FYI, the slices where The Babe painted with delightful lack of inhibition got a little too soggy to toast up nicely.  Some restraint may make for actually edible toast.

So much, again, for my goal of cutting back on artificial colors. But this could just have easily been done with all natural food color like the ones from India Tree or homemade versions. I promise, a post on making all natural food color is coming soon.

While you’re at it, check out the Art Toast Project by Ida Skivenes. She’s recreated famous paintings on toast like The Scream by Edvard Munch and a Frieda Kahlo self-portrait.  Not Five Minute Crafts but an amazing way to teach kids about art.

Did your kiddos eat all their toast after they painted it?  Miracle of all miracles, mine did!!!
