Here’s a sweet and simple STEAM project for the kids today. It’s an Invitation to Build Gumdrop Christmas Trees. They’re a sweet and fun way to get kids thinking about geometry, and nature, and Christmas, all at once. Kind of like the marshmallow castles, but with a Christmas coating on them. Have fun building (we did)!

Gumdrop Christmas Trees Supplies Needed
Here are a few hints for supplies for this simple prep project. You’ll need lots of gumdrops to make big trees! We like using spice drops because their zesty flavor usually cuts down on how many kids eat LOL. Flat toothpicks are a little less sharp if you’re worried about little kiddo hands. Bamboo skewers help kids make big, stable structures quickly, but are a bit sharper. Hot dog sticks are blunter and require a bit more force to get the gumdrop.
- Gumdrops (lots of them!)
- Toothpicks
- Bamboo skewers or hot dog sticks
- Wet towel or wipes and dry towel
Gumdrop Christmas Trees
This project is perfect for busy days when you don’t have time to set up something elaborate. All you have to do is lay out the supplies on a tray! I would also recommend setting out a wet towel and a dry towel so the kids can wipe off sticky fingers in the middle of building. We also love combining it with some of our other Christmas Tree STEAM easy activities!
Here are some of the giant trees my daughter built.
We love building projects like this because they’re tons of fun. But they also teach kids about the engineering design process, exploring trial and error, and reinforce that failing makes things better. Hello growth mindset hidden inside gumdrops!!
