Grinch Day – 15 Ways to Celebrate

How the Grinch Stole Christmas {affiliate} is one of my favorite books from when I was little.  And now I’m introducing it to my daughter by celebrating Grinch Day today with a bunch of fun activities.  Here are 15 Ways to Celebrate Grinch Day: some messy, some silly, some yummy and all really, really green…  This post contains affiliate links.

15 Ways to Celebrate Grinch Day! A celebration of the Dr. Seuss book How the Grinch Stole Christmas. There's Grinch inspired food, crafts, and play (sensory play, pretend play and games). Great for teachers, fun for a family book / movie night with the kids.

Grinch Day Play

These are great ways to play along while reading all about how to Grinch’s heart needs to be melted…  Some sensory play, some pretend play and a game, too.

Grinch Play Dough

First up is some hairy green Grinch play dough.  This project is super easy with just a few unusual additions to make it more Grinchy.  I pulled out our twist up garlic press and some old fake lashes that I don’t wear anymore (you know, mom life…).  They made for very fun add-ons to basic play dough.

Grinch Play Dough Recipe

I made two batches, one green and one yellow for the eyes.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup salt
  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 2 cups hot water
  • green and yellow food coloring
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon glycerin
  1. In a large pot, add flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Stir with a whisk until thoroughly mixed.
  2. Measure water and add approximately 10 drops green and 10 drops yellow food coloring or until a lime green color is achieved.  Use 10 drops yellow for the yellow batch. Mix until color is fully dissolved.
  3. Add colored water, vegetable oil, and glycerin to flour mixture in pot. Mix thoroughly with a spatula.
  4. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until almost playdough texture. Do not overcook as playdough continues to cook a bit and will get dry if overcooked. Remove from heat.
  5. Remove playdough from pot and place on a plate. Once playdough is cool enough for an adult to handle, knead well.
  6. Cover with a wet paper towel until cool enough to play with or store. Store in a zipper bag or other air tight container. Store in a cool, dry place.
