Ice Cream Sundae Lab Ingredients

Pretty much anything goes with this experiment. But you definitely need ice cream and some magic shell topping because that’s where the science really happens. And beakers and test tubes make it fun. Here’s what we used:

  • Ice cream
  • Magic Shell ice cream topping
  • Beakers
  • Test tubes and rack
  • Miscellaneous ice cream toppings like: crushed Oreos, sprinkles, chocolate chips, popping boba, sundae sauce

Set up Your Test Tube Topping Station

First up, gather your toppings for the Test Tube Topping Station. Are you and the kids choc-a-holics? Oreo crumbles, chocolate chips, hot fudge, chocolate jimmies… Pick your favorites. Want a more mad scientist spin? Go for some popping boba, fruit jelly and bright blue magic shell. Here’s a hint… The best place to get the boba and jelly is your favorite fro yo or boba tea shop. Just fill your cup with toppings only. Waaay cheaper than anything I could find online or in a store.

We used little beakers for the magic shell and bigger beakers for the scoops of ice cream. Have a crowd coming? Make scoops of ice cream and freeze on a waxed paper covered cookie sheet. Then just pop them in the beakers when you’re ready.

My daughter had a lot of fun concocting her own ice cream experiment. Dilemma? Wondering which mixture would be the best turned into a delicious lesson in the scientific method.

How Does Magic Shell Ice Cream Topping Work?

One of the my best memories of childhood was going to Dairy Queen for a dipped cone. Creamy soft serve surrounded by that magical, crispy chocolate shell that melted in your mouth. It was definitely one of my favorites. The good news is it’s easy to recreate at home, either with a homemade magic shell or by picking up some in the ice cream aisle at the grocery store.

The other cool thing about magic shell is the science behind it. Ever wonder what makes it crispy? It’s coconut oil. Coconut oil is a solid at room temperature. And helps make chocolate especially crunchy when poured over cold ice cream. So really, this fun sundae bar is all about learning about states of matter ;)
