Looking for fun ways to help the kids learn their math skills?  These Scratch Off Math Cards are fun to make and even more fun to use.  They’re like lottery tickets for arithmetic!  And all you need is some metallic paint and a few things you probably already have laying around the house.

  1. Gather your supplies.  You’ll need:
  2. Cut cardboard into rectangles, approximately 3″ x 5″.  The exact size doesn’t matter, you just need them big enough to write the numbers and have a scratch off area.
  3. Figure out what type of arithmetic yourkiddo needs to work on.  Make a list of equations like:
    • 1 + 1 = 2
    • 6 – 3 = 3
    • 8 x 8 = 64
    • 20 ÷ 5 = 4
  4. Now it’s time to transfer them over to your cards.  Write the equations on your cards, making sure you leave some space around the solution for the paint.

  1. Cover the solution number with tape.
  2. Make your scratch off solution: 2 parts metallic paint to 1 part dish soap and mix well.
  3. Paint over the solution number with a thin but opaque layer of the scratch off solution.  You can always come back and add another coat if necessary after a bit of drying time.  Let cards dry until they aren’t sticky anymore, approximately 1-2 hours.
  4. Then have some math scratch off fun!!

Want to have the kiddos help with the painting part?  They can practice their skills while they make them!  It’s double the math…  By the way, these are totally reusable, just paint a new layer of paint on them after they’ve been scratched off.  And save them for another day.

  1. How fun! I remember I used to love scratching off my grandma’s scratch-off lottery tickets as a kid and I still do all the scratchers from Highlights magazine junk mail even though I never mail them in. My almost Kindergartener would totally go for this

There is something so satisfying about scratching off these cards to discover what’s underneath! My mother-in-law used to write for Highlights, so my daughter has a subscription and does the same thing :)
