What is an Agamograph?

Ever felt like a painting was watching you? Maybe it was designed that way! Agamographs are a form of lenticulars or kinetic images that change based upon the angle of the viewer. They’re named after the Israeli sculptor, Yaacov Agam, who is famous for his optical art. Lenticulars have been created by artists for many centuries, with one of the first created in 1692. Now, lenticulars are often made with accordion style plastic lenses over the images to help them “move”.

  1. Cut the coloring pages along the black outer line and cut strips along the dotted lines. Keep the strips in order of the picture.
  1. Cut the white border off one of the blank frames and line pages and tape to the left side of the other blank page to create one long frame.
  1. Using a glue stick, glue the strips from one coloring page to the frame, leaving a blank space on the frame in between each strip.
  1. Fill in the blanks on the frame with the strips from the other coloring page.
  1. Cut off the white edges on the frame.
  1. Fold the picture accordion-style along the lines between the pictures.
  1. To see the agamograph effect, turn the artwork to the left and right. You’ll see both pictures!
