Star Wars lovers, it’s time to get your STEAM on!! Test your knowledge of the movies while you have fun with some science, technology, engineering, art and math! It’s a perfect way to celebrate May the Fourth or any other day of the year. And to make it easy for you, we’re celebrating with these FREE printable Star Wars STEAM Challenge Cards. These activities are easy to set up and most use supplies you already have on hand (if you’re a Star Wars fan, that is!!).
Star Wars STEAM Challenges for Kids
I worked with my resident Star Wars mega-fan to make sure these activities were truly Star Wars worthy. Here are a couple of my daughter’s (i.e. my husband, the Star Wars Geek’s) favorites…
Film a Star Wars Stop-Action Movie: We just started playing around with stop-action (or stop-motion) movies at our house. We love the Stop Motion app for iPhones. So easy to use and to make something that looks great. So have the kids pull out their Star Wars figures and give it a shot!
Make BB-8 Out of Playdough: We love this one because it’s basically a chance to tinker with play dough. Grab some white, orange, and grey dough (here’s a great recipe) and some parts like paper clips and screws and buttons and let the kids build away!
Write Your Favorite Star Wars Character’s Name in ASCII Code: Are you on the light side or the dark side? Pick a side, and a favorite character, and use the handy ASCII Code handout that comes along with the challenge cards to write in code.
Compare the Size of the Super Star Destroyer to Your City: We were totally inspired by this picture of the Destroyer compared to Manhattan on Reddit from movielover278 to get calculating our own city. It’s a really fun math problem and you could even turn it into a mapping activity with some graph paper, too.
