Why Doing Creative Projects with Kids Really Matters

Think about your life as an adult. When is the last time you had to think creatively to solve a problem? Maybe it was as simple as forgetting to take something out of the freezer for dinner and needing to combine ingredients from your pantry to come up with something your family will eat. Maybe it was bigger than that, but…

When it comes down to it, creativity is an essential life skill.

Doing creative projects with your kids really matters. Here are concrete reasons why and ways to think beyond plain art with hands-on creative thinking projects in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. STEM and STEAM are fun for kids too!

It’s important, not only for artistic and musical expression, but also for science and math, as well as social and emotional development. Creativity helps us solve problems and think on our toes. The ability to think creatively makes people more flexible, better problem solvers and more capable of adapting to changing technological advancements- all of which are necessary skills our kids need for the future.

But did you know that creativity is a skill you can foster in your kids?

Yep, that’s right. Many adults mistakenly believe that you’re either born creative, or you’re not. In reality, creativity is a skill, not a talent you’re born with.

No matter how packed our to-do lists become as parents and educators, that’s precisely why it’s so important to do creative projects with the kids in your life. Creative projects will help your kids develop critical skills, and have fun doing it! They’ll develop a lifelong love of learning and you’ll also create lasting memories together that will strengthen your bond with them.

When kids get their hands on exciting projects it inspires them to learn and explore topics they might not discover on their own. Plus, doing creative projects with your kids ties all the loose ends together because creative projects use an integrated approach. Just like life, everything is connected. We encounter science, technology, engineering, and math Every Day. And there’s no better example of this than in our kitchens.

But creative projects don’t have to be hard. Really.

I know there are some hurdles to overcome. Like setting up something the kids spend 3 minutes on. Or the mess. Or not having the right supplies. But it doesn’t have to be this way. And I’m here to help!
